Venerable Pierre Toussaint for Kids | A Heart That Made Room for Everyone
Updated: 7 days ago
What does it mean to make room for someone? Venerable Pierre Toussaint answered with the work of his hands, a place at his table, and a heart ready to care. Born into slavery in Haiti, he became a hairdresser in New York and used his earnings to help people in need.
A Heart That Made Room for Everyone is an illustrated Catholic story for children, families, and classrooms. Follow Pierre through freedom, family life with Juliette, generous service, sorrow, and prayer. His example invites us to recognize every person’s God-given dignity and practice practical kindness.

Talk about it together
1. How did Pierre use his everyday work to care for others?
2. Why was it wrong to exclude someone because of the color of their skin? How can we welcome others?
3. Pierre experienced grief and still prayed. How can we care for someone who is sad?
4. What small act of kindness could make room for another person this week?
Make room for someone
Practice with a pretend situation: a child is left out of a game or needs help carrying materials. Try a welcoming sentence and a small helpful action. Let children choose drawing, speaking, or writing. Use fictional examples rather than asking them to share painful personal experiences. Ask a trusted adult for help with unsafe or unfair treatment.
Pray together
Loving God, thank you for making every person in your image. Help us notice people who need a friend, share what we can, and make room in our hearts for others. Be near to those who are sad or treated unfairly. Amen.
