Talk about it together

How did Newman seek truth?

What does Doctor of the Church mean?

Is conscience whatever I feel like doing?

What is a faithful next step in a hard choice?

A light for the next step

Draw a lantern lighting one stepping stone. On the stone write a simple invented choice, such as whether to repeat a rumor. Around the lantern list facts to check, a teaching to consider, and a trusted helper.

A note for parents and teachers

The guide treats conscience as a judgment that needs formation, respects other Christian traditions, and identifies imagined dialogue as retelling.

Newman's dialogue is dramatized, and the special-purpose saying is a paraphrase. His teaching on conscience requires formation in truth, not automatic trust in every feeling. Pope Leo XIV proclaimed him Doctor of the Church on November 1, 2025. Conversion should never become an excuse to mock Anglicans or pressure a child to break friendships.

Pray together

God, guide us toward truth. Help us learn, pray, and take our next good step with courage and humility. Saint John Henry Newman, pray for us. Amen.
