Ash Wednesday for Kids | A Gentle Beginning of Lent

Feb 9
2 min read

A quiet cross of ashes begins the Lenten journey. This reflection invites children to hear God's call to return with their whole hearts and explains prayer, fasting, and giving as responses to love already offered.

The free resources help ages 7-11 begin with a concrete, safe action. Families and teachers can use the three-path activity to plan prayer, generosity, and age-appropriate penance with adult guidance.

Available free on YouTube since February 9, 2026. Watch the complete video above. Runtime: 2:23. Suggested ages: about 7–11.

Talk about it together

What sign begins the reflection?

Is Lent a way to make God start loving us?

What three practices does the Church offer?

What small return to God could you choose?

Three paths back to God

Draw three paths leading toward a heart labeled God's love. Name them Prayer, Penance, and Giving. On each place one safe action. Choose one to begin today. Practice the story's hand-on-heart prayer if comfortable, or simply pray without the gesture.

A note for parents and teachers

The reflection mentions mortality and fasting. Offer calm explanations and choose age-appropriate prayer and charity instead of food restriction.

Ashes are a sacramental sign, not a threat or a requirement to describe personal sins publicly. Ages 7-11 are not bound to adult fasting rules. Do not assign food restriction; use prayer, charity, and adult-guided practices.

Pray together

Jesus, bring us back to you. Help us pray, share, and make room for your love. Amen.
