When the World Prefers Lies to Truth

Following the will of God is rarely easy. The world around us is complacent and comfortable, unwilling to change. This is a dangerous place to be. If we grow comfortable in our sins and in our way of life, we will never seek His grace. We will not change. We will not repent.

The prophet Jeremiah knew this struggle well. He warned the people of Judah to turn back to God or face the destruction of Jerusalem. They did not want to hear it. Instead of heeding the warning, they threw him into a cistern. Rejecting the message did not change the outcome. But Jeremiah still suffered because of their hardness of heart. Many other prophets faced the same fate because people often prefer a comfortable lie to a hard truth.

God calls us to the same faithfulness. Every Christian has a vocation to proclaim Christ. Jesus Himself said He came to set the world on fire, and that His coming would bring division. Some will accept His grace and see the truth. Others will reject it, and those who reject it are rarely content to leave the faithful in peace.

Like Jeremiah, Christ suffered for the truth. He endured the curse of the Cross for the sake of the joy set before Him. He faced opposition from sinners just as Jeremiah did, and just as we will if we follow Him. That is why we must keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. He gives us the strength to bear our burdens, for His yoke is easy and His burden light. We must persevere to the end, running the race to win the crown, not a fading prize but eternal life.

Christ will never allow us to suffer alone. Just as Jeremiah was lifted from the cistern, the Lord comes to our aid in times of trial. He delivers the afflicted and draws us from the pit of destruction, not only from physical danger but from the eternal death of separation from God.

The world’s division brings pain, but the promise of Christ remains: “The one who perseveres to the end will be saved.” Our suffering here is temporary. As Saint Teresa of Ávila said, “In light of heaven, the worst suffering on earth will be seen to be no more serious than one night in a bad hotel.” And as Saint Paul reminds us, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no heart has imagined what God has prepared for those who love Him.”

Let us hold fast to the truth, follow Christ, and trust that He will be our Deliverer and our eternal joy.
