The Black Nazarene for Kids
Updated: Oct 18
Discover the story of the Black Nazarene, the beloved image of Jesus carrying His cross, enshrined at Quiapo Church in Manila, Philippines. No one knows for certain why the statue became so dark. It may have been darkened by fire or smoke, or it may have been carved from naturally dark wood. What matters most is the powerful reminder it gives us: Jesus understands our suffering and stays close when life is hard. In this gentle Catholic story for children, families will learn why people walk with the Black Nazarene, reach toward the statue in faith, and ask Jesus to help them carry their crosses. The story concludes with a simple prayer for courage, trust, and love. May we always remember that Jesus never abandons us. He walks beside us, helps us carry our crosses, and leads us toward joy.
After watching, families and catechists can talk about one moment that stood out, what it shows about following Jesus, and one small way to put that lesson into practice this week.
