Updated: Oct 3

Thomas More loved his family, served his country, and faced a demand he could not accept in conscience. This children’s retelling places his daughter Margaret’s love and grief beside his faithfulness to God.

The lesson pages explore truth, conscience, and safe everyday honesty. They also explain that the story simplifies history and dramatizes family conversations.

Talk about it together

How did Thomas show love to his children?

Why would he not agree with the king’s demand?

How did Margaret feel?

How can you practice truthful choices safely?

A truth-and-help plan

Read a pretend example: a game piece breaks and another child may be blamed. Write a truthful sentence and name an adult who can help repair the problem. Practice speaking clearly without blaming or boasting.

A note for parents and teachers

The retelling greatly simplifies the English Reformation and dramatizes family conversations and scenes. It is not a transcript of Margaret’s visits or a historical record of her presence at the execution. More’s martyrdom is historical. Teach respect for Christians of other traditions and avoid reenacting punishment.

Pray together

Jesus, help us love the truth and speak it with kindness. Guide our conscience and comfort people who are grieving. Saint Thomas More, pray for us. Amen.
